La Paz is home to two sea lion colonies: Los Islotes, a major breeding colony at the north end of Isla Espíritu Santo, and San Rafaelito, a smaller colony near Playa Balandra. Young sea lions are often curious and may approach swimmers on their own, making this one of La Paz's most memorable wildlife encounters. Keep your eyes open along the way. The waters around Espíritu Santo are home to dolphins, mobula rays, sea turtles, whales and an extraordinary variety of reef fish. Wildlife sightings vary by season and are never guaranteed — which is part of what makes every trip different.
